TREE FOR LIFE: A CALL FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPROVED TREE CARE. KWAHU WEST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the NADMO, Forestry Commission and Agric department has observed World Environmental Day under the theme: Tree For Life’ a call for sustainable and improve tree care” in Kwahu Ahatanan.

During the celebrations, the Kwahu West Municipality planted over 40 seedinings included, Royal Palm, Coconut tree, and assorted types of ornamental plants.

The MCE for Kwahu West Municipal Assembly,Hon. Halidu Tamimu,in his key note address opined that trees can be termed as one of the life-dependents of mankind and therefore to prevent this in the current dispensation to contribute in the Global efforts to fight climate change.

He admonished that government through NADMO, Forestry Commission and Agric department has initiated “TREE FOR LIFE” as an aggressive afforestation/reafforestation programme geared toward planting trees to restore Ghana’s lost forest cover.

He further said, a key solution to climate change is to plant trees to improve livelihood, whiles highlighted the importance of community involvement in the environmental conservation to continued efforts to make Kwahu West a greener and a more sustainable municipality.

In Furtherance, the Operations Manager Forestry Commission for Kwahu Mpraeso,Mr. Somaila Fusani alluded that Ghanaians needs an organized approach, with clear guidelines on where to plant good trees, how to maintain the trees, and who is responsible for their care, that would greatly improve efficiency and impact.

According to him,the choice of tree species often lacks consideration for economic value and suitability for local climates.

He recommended that planting trees offers economic benefits alongside native species adapted to the specific type of trees, whiles emphasised on species selection, community involvement.

Mr. Somaila Fusani assured the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly of his commitment to environmental maintenance and the sustainability importance of tree care and transformative initiative that leaves a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Finally, on her part, the Kwahu Ahatanan D/A Basic school Headmistress_ Madam Dorren Asabea,on her Addressed lamented that, the well-intentioned of the tree planting is good but past tree planted efforts in the “Ahatanan” M/A Basic school have often faced challenges, including lack of adequate care like Watering, Protection from local animals like Goat and Sheep’s whenever school is on vacation

She therefore called on the communities members to collaborate on sustainable tree care programs and ensuring to take care of the planted Trees For Life, since it’s a nationwide initiative aimed at restoring Ghana’s forest cover by acknowledge the importance of tree planting in combating climate change.
