Honourable Kofi Owusu, former Assemblyman of Kenyasi No. 1 has revealed shocking details of illegal logging in the area.

According to him, an unknown person has entered the forest illegally, which contains the Tano and Subri rivers, and cutting down logs to export it to neighbouring countries.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Owusu hinted that upon ripoff, he rushed to the scene to verify the information and took pictures of the damages.

He discovered that not only the trees within the rivers’ banks and their surroundings have been cut down.

He alluded that further investigation led him to a village owned by a certain Yaw-Vi, where he found over 700 logs, including 500+ boards and 200 beams.

Mr Owusu opined that he has reported the incident to the Regional Forestry Commission at Goaso, the regional capital of the Ahafo Region.

“The commission’s management ordered an investigation, and when questioned, Yaw-Vi revealed that Nana Bediako, the Kenyasi Number 1 Nanta Hene, was responsible for cutting down the trees”he quizzes.

He is of the view that, there must be a conscious effort to expose this bad practice, stating that he will no longer tolerate such environmental degradation.

The incident highlights the need for greater environmental protection and accountability in Ghana expecially in the Ahafo region.
