Minister of Health, Dr. Oko Boye, has announced significant advancements in the support provided to kidney patients in Ghana through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
During a recent press briefing, he revealed that every kidney patient in the country has received some form of reimbursement for dialysis sessions, marking a historic initiative in healthcare delivery.
Dr. Oko Boye explained that patients aged 18 years and below, as well as those aged 60 years and above, are receiving all four dialysis sessions free of charge. For individuals between the ages of 18 and 60, the NHIS currently covers the cost of two out of the four required sessions.
This initiative, according to him, is being implemented for the first time in Ghana’s history, showcasing the government’s commitment to improving health services for vulnerable populations.
In addition to kidney care, Dr. Oko Boye highlighted that the government has also been instrumental in providing financial support for medications for sickle cell patients and mental health services over the past five to six years.
He emphasized that the NHIS has played a crucial role in enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana, stating that private hospitals are increasingly comfortable registering with the NHIS due to its supportive framework.
