NCCE embarks on indefinite strike over stalled negotiations with Fair Wages and Salary Commission

The Divisional Executive Council (DEC) of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Division of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has announced its intention to embark on an indefinite strike action starting Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

This nationwide action is in response to the alleged failure of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to reconvene negotiations after a seven-day ultimatum was issued during their last meeting.

In a statement from the Divisional Chairperson, Rebecca Colecraft, it was noted that the union submitted proposals to the FWSC for negotiation back in May 2023.

However, despite several reminders and consultations, the Commission has not engaged in further discussions.

The DEC convened an emergency meeting where they addressed the current economic hardships, the erosion of purchasing power, and the deplorable working conditions of staff, ultimately deciding to proceed with the strike.

The NCCE has made it clear that they will continue their strike until their demands are met.

In light of this, the Fair Wages and Salary Commission (FWSC) has urged the DEC to reconsider its decision to strike, expressing regret over the union’s choice, especially as negotiations are still ongoing.

The FWSC emphasized its commitment to engaging with the NCCE in good faith and denied employing any “delay tactics” as claimed by the union.
