John Agyekum Kufuor calls for more inclusive society for PWDs

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for a more inclusive society for persons living with disabilities, emphasizing that disability can affect anyone, regardless of their wealth or education.

Speaking at the inaugural Disability Conversation hosted by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, he reflected on his personal experience, noting that he never imagined he would one day rely on a wheelchair.

Kufuor candidly shared that if someone had told him a decade ago that he would be in a wheelchair today, he would have dismissed it as impossible.

“This prophecy is the reality today,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding towards individuals with disabilities.

He urged for greater acceptance and integration of people with disabilities into society, stressing the need to embrace diversity and develop tolerance for all individuals.

Kufuor also underscored the significance of the Disability Act in fostering an environment where everyone, including those with disabilities, feels safe, valued, and protected.

Justice Gabriel Pwoman, a Supreme Court Judge, echoed Kufuor’s sentiments by pointing out that despite several laws designed to protect persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana, their living conditions continue to deteriorate.

He asserted that if these laws were effectively implemented, the general welfare of PWDs would have improved significantly.
