The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has initiated an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration in Kumasi, which resulted in the injury of a police officer.
The protest, organized by the NDC, escalated into chaos as tensions flared between demonstrators and law enforcement.
According to reports, the situation became violent when demonstrators attempted to breach police barricades and gain access to the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC).
In response, police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. While the exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, one police officer sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention.
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reached out to the injured officer to wish him well.
In a statement issued by the police, they clarified that the demonstration ended peacefully in most locations, except for an isolated incident in Kumasi.
They emphasized that some protesters deviated from the agreed-upon arrangements and attempted to force their way into the EC office.
The police managed to restore order and control the situation.
Despite claims from some protesters that shots were fired during the clash, the police have denied these allegations, asserting that there was no gunfire at the EC office and no demonstrators were injured by police action.
The GPS thanked all stakeholders involved for their cooperation during the protest and reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security.
