The Ghana Police Service has pledged its readiness to maintain law and order during the nationwide protest organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on today, September 17, 2024.
The protest, which is underway in all 16 regional capitals, is in response to the party’s concerns over alleged discrepancies in the voter register managed by the Electoral Commission (EC).
At a press briefing, Director of Police Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, reassured the public that the police are fully equipped to provide security throughout the demonstration.
NDC leaders plan to submit petitions to the EC’s regional offices and headquarters in Accra, as the party continues to express frustration over what they believe to be flaws in the voter register ahead of the 2024 elections.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized that the NDC has been reminded of its responsibilities under the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), which outlines the requirements for organizing public demonstrations.
The police have also agreed with the NDC on the routes for the protest, which will start at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and end at the EC headquarters in Accra.
The NDC’s demonstration comes after their request for a forensic audit of the voter register was rejected by the EC.
The party alleges that the EC is planning to rig the elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which they say will not be tolerated.
The police have assured the public that they will ensure the maintenance of security, law, and order throughout the protest and beyond.
