An Election Observer Group, Care for Free and Fair Elections Ghana (CARE Ghana) has announced its support and active participation in the upcoming nationwide demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The NDC has scheduled the “Enough Is Enough, Protect Our Vote Demo” for September 17, 2024, to address concerns regarding the accuracy of the voters’ register.
According to the Executive Director of CARE Ghana, David Kumi Addo, the organization is advocating for an independent forensic audit of the voter register to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
He criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for a lack of clarity and transparency in their operations, stating that the demonstration will provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to voice their concerns and demand necessary corrections to the voters’ register.
The NDC’s protest stems from allegations of discrepancies in the voter register that could compromise the integrity of the upcoming December 7 elections.
Despite their requests for a forensic audit, the EC has rejected these calls, asserting that such an audit is unnecessary.
According to Mr. Kumi-Addo, CARE Ghana’s decision to join the protest emphasizes its commitment to protecting voting rights and promoting electoral accountability.
He stressed that addressing these issues is crucial for maintaining public trust in Ghana’s democratic processes as the country approaches a critical election period.
