The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has appealed to former President John Dramani Mahama to engage the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in discussions to address the discrepancies identified in the provisional voters register.
During a press conference in Accra, Deputy Chairman for Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, emphasized the importance of dialogue, noting that the NDC has yet to provide the EC with evidence of the discrepancies they claim to have discovered during the recent exhibition exercise.
Mr. Tettey highlighted that despite the NDC’s promise to share their findings following a meeting on September 6, 2024, multiple requests from the EC for this information have gone unanswered.
He described the NDC’s demand for a forensic audit of the voter register as misguided and unnecessary, asserting that such an audit would not enhance the EC’s existing processes for verifying the provisional voters register.
The EC maintains that it has the expertise to address any issues raised and reiterated its commitment to resolving discrepancies identified during the exhibition exercise.
Mr. Tettey urged the NDC to trust the Commission’s ability to rectify any problems, stating that the EC has historically managed similar issues since its inception.
The NDC has been vocal about its concerns regarding the integrity of the voter register and has planned a nationwide demonstration on September 17, 2024, to press for a forensic audit and to highlight the lack of transparency from the EC.
The party’s leadership has indicated that if these issues are not addressed, they could jeopardize the credibility of the upcoming elections.
