Executive Director for Care For Free and Fair Elections Ghana (CARE GHANA), David Kumi Addo, has expressed his full support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s decision to stage nationwide demonstrations on September 17, 2024, in protest of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of discrepancies in the voter register.
Mr. Addo highlighted that numerous complaints have been raised against the EC, yet these concerns appear to remain unaddressed.
The NDC’s grievances arose during the recent voter exhibition exercise, where they identified several irregularities in the voter register.
Following a meeting with the EC to discuss these issues, the NDC’s request for a forensic audit of the register was denied. After submitting presidential nomination forms on behalf of John Mahama, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah announced the party’s decision to organize the nationwide protest.
Speaking during an interview on Taken Over News on an Accra-based radio station Hot FM, Mr. Kumi Addo stated that if the EC has chosen not to heed the concerns of Ghanaians, then the protest is a necessary action for the greater good of the country.
According to him, this protest is going to ensure accountability in the electoral processes.
The planned demonstrations will see NDC supporters marching to all regional EC offices, with national executives presenting a formal petition at the EC headquarters in Accra.
The NDC aims to pressure the EC to address the irregularities in the voter register ahead of the December 7 general elections, emphasizing the need for free and fair electoral processes.
