The Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights has declared a nationwide protest against the Ghana Police Service, scheduled for tomorrow, September 11, 2024.

The demonstration, themed “Occupy and Cleanse the Crime Scene,” aims to highlight systematic failures within the police force.

During a press conference, Convenor of the group, William Kofi Yirenkyi called for the immediate dismissal of several police officials, including ACP Faustina Agyeiwaa Kodua Andoh-Kwofi, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Greater Accra Regional Commander, and Superintendent Augustine Offei, the Commander of the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit at the CID Headquarters.

He criticized these officials for failing to act on numerous criminal complaints, including those involving violence and threats to national security.

Mr. Yirenkyi pointed out that public trust in the Police Service has significantly declined, with only 28% of Ghanaians expressing confidence in the institution. Furthermore, 65% of Ghanaians identify the Ghana Police Service as the most corrupt institution in the country.

“These statistics reveal that the Ghana Police Service is no longer viewed as protectors but as contributors and corroborators to injustice,” he stated.

The protest aims to raise public awareness about the issues within the Ghana Police Service and to demand accountability from public officials.

Mr. Yirenkyi also called on Inspector General of Police Akufo Dampare to resign if reforms are not initiated within the next seven days, stating that failure to comply will lead to legal actions and petitions for impeachment.

He seized the opportunity to encourage Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and members of the international community to join the protest to emphasize the importance of justice and accountability within the police force.
