Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Godfred Dame, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combatting illegal mining activities that threaten Ghana’s environment, particularly its vegetation and water bodies.
Addressing attendees at the 2024/2025 Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr. Dame announced that over 140 cases of illegal mining, involving more than 850 accused individuals, are currently being prosecuted in court.
These cases, according to him, span several regions, including Eastern, Ashanti, Greater Accra, and Upper West, with significant progress being made in their resolution.
The Attorney General emphasized the government’s dedication to eradicating the menace of illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” and highlighted the introduction of severe penalties, including a 20-year jail term and substantial fines for individuals found guilty of engaging in such activities.
In addition to addressing illegal mining, Godfred Dame expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission, stating that he has not observed any issues with the Commission’s handling of electoral processes.
He urged Ghanaians to support the Commission as it works to ensure fair and transparent elections.
