The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun an aggressive exercise to replace faulty meters across parts of Accra, particularly in the Accra East District.

The exercise, which kicked off today, targets approximately 250,000 faulty meters spread across La, Legon, Adenta, Kwabenya, and surrounding areas.

The move comes in response to numerous customer complaints about malfunctioning meters, with many reporting negative readings when purchasing credit, especially those using prepaid meters.

In light of these issues, ECG has launched a two-month meter replacement program in the Accra East District, which covers Madina, La, and its environs.

During a media briefing at the Trade Fair in La, Ing Bismark Otoo, the Regional General Manager of ECG for Accra East, revealed that the company has entered into contractual agreements with 10 sub-contractors across the affected districts.

These sub-contractors are expected to replace at least 37 meters daily in each district by the end of October.

Ing Otoo emphasized that this initiative will significantly improve ECG’s revenue generation.

Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of ECG, also issued stern warnings to customers against tampering with the new meters, as several incidents have been reported of customers attempting to modify meters to slow down their operation.

The new smart meters installed are designed to prevent such tampering, and any attempts to damage them could lead to a complete breakdown of the meter, with the customer facing potential apprehension.
