A near-chaotic situation unfolded at the Surgery Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) after the Minority Spokesperson on Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, visited to inquire about the suspension of elective surgeries allegedly due to faulty elevators.
This visit followed the hospital’s announcement regarding the suspension, prompting Akandoh to verify the claims.
Upon arrival, Akandoh and accompanying journalists were met by a staff member who refused to allow interviews within the premises, leading to an altercation.
Mr. Akandoh expressed his shock at discovering that the lift in the department had not been operational for the past four to five years.
He questioned the hospital’s management for failing to conduct regular maintenance and allowing the lift to deteriorate completely.
The Ranking Member voiced his concern that ordinary Ghanaians seeking elective surgeries are bearing the brunt of the hospital management’s negligence.
He called on the Minister of Health and other stakeholders to address the issue promptly within 24 hours to ensure that patients receive the necessary care without further delays.
