President Akufo-Addo has dismissed the controversy surrounding the decision to sell hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to his Minister for Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotels, as unnecessary.
This follows protests led by North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and organized labor, which resulted in a nationwide industrial action against the sale.
In response to the uproar, SSNIT decided to abandon its plan to divest a major stake in four hotels after facing significant pressure from labor groups.
Speaking at the Delegates Congress of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the controversy was unwarranted and highlighted SSNIT’s strong financial performance, noting a profit of over GHȼ230 million in its 2023 financial report.
He argued that this success should alleviate concerns regarding the management of SSNIT.
The President called on organized labor to refrain from strikes and instead seek amicable solutions to their grievances with the government, stating that there is no need for constant threats of industrial action when issues arise.
