NPP Condemns NDC’s Stance on Peace Declaration Ahead of General Elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken note of a publication on myjoyonline.com dated August 15, 2024, titled “We won’t sign peace declaration ahead of elections, says Asiedu Nketia.” This statement was attributed to the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Asiedu Nketia, during his appearance on Joy News’ current affairs program, PM Express, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

In response, the NPP strongly condemns the NDC National Chairman’s statement, deeming it unfortunate and incendiary. The NPP expresses serious concern over the continual tendency of the NDC leadership to create tensions and prepare their supporters to reject the outcome of the upcoming 2024 general elections, foreseeing their defeat.

The NPP appeals to the NDC to reconsider its position for the national interest and avoid making statements that could escalate political tensions, which may have far-reaching implications for the peace and security of the country.

Furthermore, the NPP reaffirms its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and stability before, during, and after the 2024 elections, and pledges to accept the election outcome in good faith. It emphasizes that it has consistently demonstrated this commitment throughout the Fourth Republic, even in instances where the party had legitimate concerns about electoral processes and outcomes.

The NPP also highlights its history of resorting to appropriate channels, including the courts, the Peace Council, IPAC, and other stakeholders, to address grievances and advocate for electoral reforms when necessary, urging its supporters to uphold this principled approach despite provocations from the NDC.

While reiterating its commitment to signing the 2024 Election Peace Declaration, the NPP calls on the National Peace Council, Civil Society Organizations, religious and traditional authorities, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to join in condemning the NDC’s stance and urging the party to engage in appropriate channels to resolve any grievances. The NPP questions the NDC’s participation in national forums such as the Peace Council, IPAC, and national security meetings despite its stated stance against signing the peace declaration.

Finally, the NPP reminds the NDC of the peaceful nature of Ghanaians and expresses confidence that irrespective of the election outcome, Ghana will not experience any conflict, emphasizing that the will of Ghanaians will always prevail.
