Mahama supports Asiedu Nketia’s concerns on peace pacts ahead of elections

Former President John Dramani Mahama, Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has supported concerns raised by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, regarding the effectiveness of signing peace pacts ahead of elections.

During a media encounter in Ho on August 16, Mahama clarified that the NDC has not made an official decision against signing such pacts, but he understands Asiedu Nketia’s skepticism.

According to him, the NDC may refrain from signing a peace pact this year, emphasizing that merely signing a document does not guarantee peace.

Asiedu Nketia, speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on August 15, expressed doubts about the value of peace declarations, citing past experiences where such agreements did not lead to meaningful outcomes.

Mahama echoed this sentiment, stating that the focus should be on creating the necessary conditions for peace rather than just signing agreements.

He criticized the practice of holding ceremonies to sign peace pacts without addressing the underlying issues that threaten stability, referencing instances where violence occurred without accountability.
