Ghanaian rapper Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has been disqualified from contesting the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election due to his non-residential status.
The disqualification was announced in a communique issued by the SRC on August 16, 2024, following a vetting process conducted on August 11.
The SRC’s Vetting Committee assessed multiple candidates for various positions, revealing that Guru and another aspirant, Lawrence Edinam Egleh, do not meet the eligibility criteria outlined in Article 30 (1) (a) of the UG SRC Constitution.
This article stipulates that candidates must be residents of the university’s halls to qualify for executive positions.
Guru had previously expressed his desire to run for SRC president, citing pressing student needs and a commitment to address issues such as accommodation and inter-hall conflicts. However, his campaign has now been halted due to this technicality, leaving his supporters disappointed.
Despite the setback, Guru’s campaign team has indicated plans to challenge the disqualification, aiming to clear the hurdle and continue pursuing his presidential ambitions.
