68 victims of the Appiatse disaster are threatening to eject occupants from their lands being used for Phase One of the redevelopment project.

The victims are demanding their houses back from stakeholders, as the leadership has failed to show them sites for Phase Three of the project, leaving them homeless.

In a press conference held at the Appiatse Old Site, the group’s Secretary, Mr. Joseph Abu Balu, stated that as broken and desperate individuals, their lives have become unbearable due to the inaction of stakeholders.

He recalled that the Appiatse Phase Three project, which was commissioned by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has now become a “distant memory, leaving them to suffer in silence.”

Mr. Balu gave the government a two-week ultimatum to address the issue, warning that if no positive response is received by the end of August 2024, they will be compelled to embark on a demonstration to register their discontent.

The victims are demanding that the government and stakeholders provide them with clear information about the status of the project and a timeline for their resettlement.

The Appiatse disaster, which occurred on January 20, 2022, left 13 people dead and about 900 people displaced.

The government, through the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Team (ARIT), has been working on rebuilding the community. However, the victims’ demands a clear resettlement plan to ensure that all affected individuals are adequately supported during the reconstruction process.
