Workers at the Pambros Salt Factory, located along the Weija Junction stretch in Accra, are protesting against what they allege is an attempt by traditional authorities to allocate parts of the salt mining area to Chinese business interests.

Dressed in red and black attire, the workers chanted slogans and expressed their strong opposition to the move, fearing it could lead to massive job losses.

Reports indicate that over 1,000 workers may lose their jobs if the salt mining area is handed over. Several aggrieved workers voiced their concerns, highlighting the potential impact on their livelihoods and calling for immediate intervention to prevent the takeover.

The workers are urging President Akufo-Addo to take action, citing the government’s significant expenditure on salt.

They are appealing to relevant authorities to intervene and protect their jobs.

Chairman of the Local Workers Union, Evans Kofi Otoo expressed confusion over the state’s failure to protect the company, especially since Ghana is reportedly importing salt worth USD 1.2 million annually.

He pleaded with the government for urgent intervention to safeguard the company from potential collapse.

Managing Director Michael Odartey Wellington warned that the encroachment activities not only threaten the company’s investments but could also lead to flooding in surrounding areas such as Dansoman, Malam Junction, and Malam Market.
