Mahama pledges to abolish E-Levy and betting tax

Former President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to abolish the Electronic Levy (E-Levy) and the tax on betting winnings if elected in the upcoming 2024 national elections.

Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Townhall Meeting at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Mahama outlined his plans to address key economic issues that have been a burden on Ghanaians.

Mahama criticized the E-Levy, a tax on electronic transactions, stating that it has failed to meet revenue expectations while placing unnecessary financial pressure on citizens, emphasizing that his administration would explore alternatives to the betting tax, which has been a point of contention among the youth.

Addressing concerns raised by Twitter Influencer KalyJay, Mahama also indicated that he is not against the migration of professionals to different countries. However, he called for an organized system of contracts with countries in need of professional workers

This, according to him, will boost the skills of workers as well as contribute to the country’s revenue.

Mahama highlighted the need for a more streamlined process for exporting local talent abroad, expressing concern over the current state of professionals leaving Ghana due to unfavorable economic conditions
