Chaos erupts at Supreme Court nominees’ vetting as Minority attempts to halt processes

Chaos erupted at the Appointments Committee of Parliament during the vetting of two Supreme Court nominees, Justice Sophia Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, as the Minority attempted to halt the process.

Before the vetting could commence, Mahama Ayariga, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, raised concerns about the constitutionality of the appointments.

He argued that the president has been exercising powers without any foundation in the constitution or law. Ayariga cited several articles of the constitution, including Article 128, Article 144, Article 296, and Article 298, to support his claim that the appointments are unconstitutional.

He questioned whether the committee should proceed with the vetting exercise.

In response, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, emphasized that the role of the Appointments Committee is solely to consider and vet the nominations made by the President.

He stated that the committee is not determining whether to take a matter under a certificate of agency, but rather conducting the vetting process.
