The Ghanaians National Alliances, in conjunction with the Osagyefo Youth Movement Unification Council, has called on all independent candidates from across the country to unite behind a single independent candidate for the upcoming elections.
Speaking during a press conference on Monday, August 12, 2024, in Accra, the spokesperson of the group, Akwa Obodai, indicated that their goal is to provide a viable alternative to the traditional two-party system dominated by the NPP and NDC and to give the people of Ghana a fresh choice for leadership.
“It’s time for a change. It’s time to break free from the cycle of politics as usual. We need fresh ideas, new energy, and a leader who puts Ghana first, not party interests,” he emphasized.
Some of these leaders include Kofi Koranteng of the New Vision Movement, Christian Kwabena Andrews, aka Osofo Kyiri Abosom of the Ghana Union Movement, Alan John Kyerematen of the Movement for Change, Nana Kwame Bediako of the New Force, Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), amongst others.
According to him, the high rate of poverty and corruption in the country have led to the realization and formation of the group.
He stated that they believe that by coming together, we can build a stronger, more unified front that truly represents the voices and aspirations of all Ghanaians.
Mr. Obodai is thereby appealing to all independent candidates to join the fight for the elimination of the two dominant parties in Ghana and fight for the betterment of Ghanaians and not their personal interests.
“An independent candidate will be answerable only to the people, not a political party. They will bring innovative solutions, unencumbered by party dogma,” Mr. Obodai stressed.
Mr. Obodai also emphasized that it is better to stand united in order to eliminate these two dominant parties—the NPP and the NDC—because standing as a single independent party does not guarantee success in the upcoming 2024 elections.
