Professor Godfrey A. Bokpin, an economist and professor of finance at the University of Ghana, has urged the next government to limit the number of ministers to 40, citing the current economic challenges facing the country.
Speaking at the National Citizens Review and Feedback on the IMF Support Programme in Accra, Professor Bokpin emphasized the need for credible leadership to internally stabilize the economy by reducing wasteful spending.
He recommended a gradual reduction in the number of ministries and departmental agencies that do not contribute to efficiency and productivity.
Professor Bokpin also expressed concerns that the IMF recovery program benefits only a few Ghanaians, calling for its abolition and the scrapping of the E-levy to ease the economic burden on citizens.
Abdulkarim Mohammed, Coordinator of the Economic Governance Platform (EGP), warned that government expenditure will surge during the 2024 elections, potentially destabilizing the economy and leading to another IMF bailout.
He stressed the need for prudent governance to maintain economic stability.
According to him, studies have shown that because of government over spending attitudes during elections, the economy get shambles and normally run to IMF for support Programme.
