Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel has withdrawn from buying more than half of the shares of the SNNIT Hotels after one of the largest trade unions in Ghana, Organised Labour, declared that a strike would be effective on Monday, July 15, 2024.
Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is an insurance company where almost every civil servant insures their wages until retirement. The company also owns hotels, and now the board of directors wants to sell a significant percentage, as much as 60%. This decision has sparked a wide range of reactions.
People who insure themselves at SSNIT are mostly under Organised Labour. Since the board is unwilling to comply with their demands, a strike has been declared. It will be effective on Monday, July 15, 2024. Reports following this declaration indicate that Bryan Acheampong, who had expressed interest in buying shares, is no longer interested according to a communique.
The leadership of organized labor says they will need an official release from SSNIT, or else the strike will be effective.
