AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL GHANA CALLS FOR TOTAL ABOLISHMENT OF THE DEATH PENALTY FROM THE CONSTITUTION
Amnesty International Ghana is calling on government to get rid of the death penalty from the 1992 constitution completely.
This according to them,they are completely against the death penalty sentence because it does not serve as deterents to others.
Speaking at the Launch of Amnesty International Human Rights and Death Penalty Report 2023,Director, Amnesty International Ghana Genevieve Partinton alluded that there can be mistakes in the justice system in Ghana and therefore it is the right direction that the death penalty must be abolish.
She added that the death penalty itself is form of disparity tool been used against the less privileged people in society, because the death penalty ratio in 2024 alone shows that majority of the people comes from a poor background.
On the issue of LGBTQ, the local chapter of Amnesty International is urging President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo not to sign the LGBTQ Bill that is before him into law.
According to them, the signing of the bill into law will dent Ghana reputation on the global community as far as human rights is concern.
Director at Amnesty International Ghana, Genevieve Partinton said the passage of the bill into law will criminalise the lives of people who are of age and chooses how to leave their luv lives without offending anyone.
She added that,although the bill is currently in court, she is hopeful that the supreme vote for human which will make President Nana Akuffo not to sign the bill.
