The era of ‘chew and pour’ is over – NaCCA says as it launches new curriculum

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has announced that starting from the 2023/2024 academic year, the era of rote memorization for Senior High Schools (SHS), STEM schools, and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) in Ghana will come to an end.

Under the new curriculum, arts students will no longer be restricted from learning major aspects of science, as was the case with the old curriculum. NaCCA has revealed that the new curriculum will allow students to choose a minimum of seven and a maximum of nine subjects, with talented students having the option to take more than nine subjects.

This curriculum has been designed for grammar, STEM, and technical schools across the country. Professor Edward Appiah, the Director General for NaCCA, highlighted that all the necessary teaching materials for the new standard-based curriculum have been provided in the teacher manual. He also stated that Ghana is the second country in Sub-Saharan Africa to develop such a curriculum and emphasized that it is poised to bring about significant change in the country.

Additionally, Professor Appiah mentioned that book writers are now encouraged to develop textbooks for the new curriculum, with the condition that they meet the required standards for approval. He also noted that all the learning materials and equipment needed for the implementation of the new curriculum are being sponsored by Mastercard through T-TEL.
