Some members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment Science and Technology in collaboration with executives from the E-Waste Fund Administration, Ecopartners, and Electrical and Electronics Waste Management Fund have paid a working visit to some waste collection sites in the Eastern region to assess the progress of the pilot operation.
The visit was also to have a personal interaction with the scraps dealers and collectors on the way forward to the accomplishment of the e-waste management mission backed by the speed pace of modernization and digitalization, the market for electronic equipment, such as washing machines, refrigerators, cookers, televisions, air-conditions, canned and bottled foods and beverages has flooded the markets as a result of embracement and high patronage with adverse production of solid and electronic waste.
However, these wastes are managed under deplorable environmental, health, and safety conditions such as open burning and non-separation of lead-acid batteries and harmful carbon practices that are causing grave environmental harm to human health.
It was against this background that the government instituted the E-waste Fund Administration to ensure proper handling and management of this waste to reverse its negative effects and create jobs and income through recycling.
During the site’s inspection at Koforidua Pipe -Line and Osino in the Eastern region, the Chairman of the Parliamentary select committee Dr.Emmanual Marfo, who doubles as the Member of parliament for Oforikrom, explained the motive behind the visit and also admonished the dealers to ensure a clean work devoid of buying stolen items.
On their part, the leader of the scraps dealers shared some challenges with the team and sought their support.
