Commercial drivers who had earlier threatened to increase fares next week have decided to postpone their decision pending a meeting with the Ministry of Transport.
The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) had initially resolved to implement a 20% upward adjustment in transport fares across all loading points effective January 24, 2024.
This decision was attributed to the impact of excessive taxes on spare parts, leading to increased operational costs.
In response to the GPRTU’s announcement, the Ministry of Transport has advised the public to pay the existing fare rates despite the anticipated fare hike.
The ministry emphasized that any negotiations or decisions affecting fare adjustments would be communicated to the public when necessary, as done in the past.
The Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abasss Imoro, mentioned that they are now putting their earlier decision on hold as they engage in discussions with the Ministry of Transport.
