The Ghana Demographic and Health Survey Report for 2022 reveals that three million, six hundred thousand women aged between 15-49, constituting 50 percent of women in that age group, are either obese or overweight.
This health challenge is linked to poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles.
Despite various efforts, including exercise, product use, and dieting schemes, a significant portion of Ghanaian women continue to struggle with obesity.
The survey, which involved interviews with over 16,000 women and 7,000 men, indicates that 3 million women aged 15-49 are affected.
The World Health Organization defines overweight and obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may negatively impact health.
The report, presented by Government Statistician Professor Kobina Anim, identifies lifestyle, poor eating habits (including excessive consumption of chocolate, ice cream, and fried foods), and societal pressures as the three main drivers contributing to the increasing rates of obesity among women in Ghana.
