Care Ghana opposes SDA Church’s election date change proposal

Care For Free and Fair Elections Ghana, known as Care Ghana, believes that the Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s request to change the Election Day is impractical.

The Seventh-Day Adventist Church is proposing an amendment to the December 7, 2024, date for the general elections.

In their petition to the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General, the church cited a conflict with the Sabbath, which falls on a Saturday, a holy day dedicated to the worship of God.

They propose adopting either the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November as the new date for Ghana’s general elections, seeking legal codification to guarantee Adventists the freedom to worship.

The Executive Director of Care For Free and Fair Elections Ghana, David Kumi-Addo, expressed his opinion on the matter to Hot FM, a radio-based station in Accra.

He believes that if the request is granted, it could set a precedent, potentially leading to other faith groups requesting a change of the election date when it does not align with their religious practices.
