A recent study conducted by African Education Watch, a civil society organization focused on education, has unveiled that expenses incurred by parents, including prospectus costs, surpass the government’s expenditure under the free Senior High School program.
As per the findings, the government’s average spending per student in boarding schools was GHS 1,147, and for day students, it was GHS 1,107. However, the report highlights that parents spent GHS 2,477 on prospectuses for their children in boarding schools.
Additionally, parents shelled out an extra GHS 4,000 on personal items such as perfume, detergents, and sanitary pads during the 2021–2022 academic year.
Mr. Divine Kpe, Senior Programmes Officer at African Education Watch, presented these findings at an education financing conference in Accra.
The report, titled “The Financial Burden of the Free SHS Policy and Implications for Equitable Access to Education,” brings attention to the increasing costs of prospectuses, which rose by 38 percent from the initial stages of policy implementation.
According to the report, parents of continuing day students reported an average annual spending of GH¢4,400 on their children’s education.
This allocation included 40 percent for transportation, 50 percent for breakfast, and 10 percent for books. Furthermore, the study revealed that parents of day students spent a total of GHC5,507, including prospectus costs, surpassing the government’s spending of GHS 1,107.
