The Creative Arts Industry in Ghana has initiated a campaign encouraging music producers and DJs to prioritize local music during the festive season.
The campaign, known as #PlayGhana, is led by Gyankromah Akufo-Addo, the director of the Creative Arts Agency, and renowned music producer and cultural activist, Smallgod-Nana Appiasei.
The goal is to amplify the rich sounds of Ghanaian music and garner support for local music, advocating for legislation favoring the broadcasting of local content.
Director Gyankromah Akufo-Addo expressed that the #PlayGhana campaign aims to push Ghanaian music to the forefront of audiences, starting domestically.
The Creative Arts Agency plans to collaborate with stakeholders in the music, film, and broadcasting industries to review local content regulations.
Akufo-Addo called for amendments to both the cultural policy and the broadcasting bill, drawing inspiration from Nigeria’s 70% local content law across music, film, and broadcasting.
The campaign seeks to promote and celebrate the diverse talents within Ghana’s music industry.
High-profile dignitaries and prominent Ghanaian artists, including Black Sherif, Samini, Reggie Rockstone, and D-Black, have joined the cause, lending their voices to the campaign for increased support and recognition of local music during the festive season and beyond.
