GRIDCo workers threaten ‘Dumsor’ over financial challenges, blame ECG for payment irregularities

Workers of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) are threatening a return of ‘dumsor’ (intermittent power outages) this Christmas if the financial status of the company is not immediately improved.

The workers attribute the financial challenges to the non-functioning Cash Waterfall Mechanism and blame the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for their difficulties.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Energy, the Board Chairman, and the Chief Executive of GRIDCo, the Senior Staff Association’s National Chairman, Wisdom Kojo Adenyo, expressed concern about the poor cash flow situation.

The workers claim that the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, used as the mode of payment to industry players in the sector, is not working and is suspected to have been discontinued.

The letter points fingers at ECG, GRIDCo’s major customer, for refusing to pay in full for the services rendered by the company.

According to the staff, GRIDCo bills ECG over GH₵100 million per month, of which only about 18% to 25% is paid irregularly.

The workers warn that the ongoing financial challenges have implications not only on GRIDCo’s operations but also on service delivery to customers and the general welfare of staff.

They threatened\\ a possible return to the days of intermittent power outages if the Cash Waterfall Mechanism is not restored or alternative financial support is provided for GRIDCo.

This development highlights the challenges within the power sector in Ghana and the potential risks of a financial crisis affecting the smooth operation of key entities involved in the supply chain.
