A new digital taxi service named Tap and Go has been launched in Accra by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President.
The Tap and Go app, functioning similarly to established taxi apps such as Uber, Yango, and Bolt, is currently undergoing a pilot phase in selected areas of Accra (Airport, East Legon, University of Ghana, Circle/Kaneshie, and Dansoman).
The full nationwide rollout is planned for the following year.
Nana Nimako Bresiamah, the National Chairman of the GPRTU, announced during the launch that the app’s introduction is the result of a collaborative effort between GPRTU and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He noted that the collaboration was initiated in response to concerns raised by taxi drivers about the impact of foreign online taxi services on their businesses.
Bresiamah highlighted that, following discussions with Dr. Bawumia, the Vice President assured them of a solution, which has now materialized in the form of the Tap and Go app.
The Chairman expressed deep gratitude on behalf of GPRTU to Dr. Bawumia for his concern and intervention in addressing the challenges faced by Ghanaian taxi drivers in the wake of foreign taxi apps.
