The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has identified the unequal distribution of resources as a key factor hampering Parliament’s effective oversight of the Executive Arm of Government.

Bagbin argues that the government’s allocation of 600 million Cedis is insufficient to empower the legislature adequately, especially in contrast to the substantial allocations consistently received by the executive, which are in the billions of Cedis.

Addressing attendees at a Press Soiree in Ho, Volta Region, as part of the commemoration of 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in Ghana, Mr. Bagbin stressed the urgent need for reforms to strengthen parliamentary governance in the country.

The Speaker further highlighted that the challenges faced in overseeing the executive are compounded by the lack of support from the government for the media.

In summary, Speaker Bagbin is advocating for a more equitable allocation of resources to Parliament, emphasizing the importance of reforms to enhance the effectiveness of parliamentary governance.

Additionally, he underscores the need for improved support from the government for both Parliament and the media in their respective roles in overseeing and reporting on government activities.
