Parliament has instructed the Ministries of Energy and Health to collaborate and find a lasting solution to issues related to electricity supply to health facilities nationwide.
This decision follows the revelation by Adama Sulemana, the Member of Parliament for Tain, that the Tain District Hospital had been disconnected from the national power grid by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) due to an outstanding debt of over GH¢7 million.
Despite the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, stating that power has been restored to the health facility, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Second Deputy Speaker who chaired today’s session, emphasized that hospitals should not undergo any power interruptions in their healthcare services.
The health facility was reportedly disconnected in October by NEDCo due to the unpaid debt but was later reconnected after various discussions involving the power distributor, hospital management, and other stakeholders.
In a statement during the parliamentary session, Adama Sulemana, the MP for Tain, urged Parliament to compel the government to cover the electricity costs for the efficient operation of the Tain District Hospital.
