Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Amnesty International has called on the Ghanaian Parliament and government to halt the consideration of the anti-gay bill, officially known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
Amnesty International contends that the bill, if passed, would violate human rights, particularly the principles of equality and non-discrimination, freedom of expression, association, and privacy, as well as prohibitions against torture.
The bill seeks to criminalize same-sex relationships and activities, including advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, same-sex marriage or cohabitation, and providing support services to LGBTQ+ individuals.
Amnesty International argues that the bill encourages hatred and intolerance and promotes persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
If enacted, the law would impose penalties, including imprisonment, for individuals engaged in activities perceived as “LGBTI nature.”
The organization calls for the immediate withdrawal of the bill.
