The Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has issued a stern warning that television signals to homes and offices could face shutdown from the next year if broadcasters refuse to pay for the usage of the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) platform.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, Owusu-Ekuful stated that the government, which has covered the operating costs of the platform, can no longer bear the financial burden. Despite multiple notices, some media houses have been reluctant to comply with payment obligations.
She emphasized that none of the broadcasters on the DTT platform have paid for its usage, and this situation is unsustainable given the current economic state.
The minister clarified that the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) is not a broadcaster hosted on this platform, and none of its constituent members have made any payments.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful warned that if payments are not made, there is a risk of the platform being shut down due to non-payment of operational expenses, potentially leading to a disruption in TV broadcast signals.
