The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged the government to utilize the contingency fund, designated for emergency situations.
During his contribution to the debate on the 2024 budget and economic policy, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that funds from the contingency vote could be employed to assist those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
Regrettably, he noted that addressing this issue is not currently a government priority. Approximately nine weeks after the flood, around 40,000 displaced individuals are still residing in classrooms, a situation that Mr. Ablakwa finds deeply concerning.
Furthermore, Mr. Ablakwa criticized the Finance Minister for what he perceives as a failure to effectively utilize the contingency vote, which Parliament approves annually.
He pointed out that some parents are withdrawing their children from the only secondary school in Mepe because the school is currently being used as housing, making it challenging to resume regular educational activities.
Mr. Ablakwa appealed to the Finance Minister to allocate a portion of the contingency vote to address the situation in Mepe instead of allocating it to projects like the National Cathedral.
