Female Members of Parliament from the minority group are urging the government to eliminate all taxes on sanitary pads in the country to ensure affordability for all girls and women.
The MPs have given the government a one-month ultimatum to abolish taxes on sanitary pads.
During a press briefing in Parliament, the minority female MPs, led by Deputy Minority Whip Comfort Doyoe Ghansah, joined by market women and women representatives from the City Campus of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), passionately appealed for accessible and affordable menstrual hygiene products.
Emphasizing the critical importance of affordable sanitary pads for all women and girls, Comfort Doyoe Ghansah, who represents Ada, categorized them as a fundamental necessity for health, dignity, and access to education.
While the government recently removed taxes on locally produced sanitary pads, the women argue that this is insufficient since a significant portion of the pads are imported.
Comfort Doyoe Ghansah is calling for the removal of taxes from imported sanitary pads as well, mirroring the exemption granted to locally produced ones.
The demand aims to ensure that all women and girls have affordable access to essential menstrual hygiene products.
