Minority alleges President Akufo-Addo’s violation over delayed assent to Witchcraft Amendment Bill

The Minority in Parliament is alleging that President Akufo-Addo has violated the constitution by not signing the amendment to the Criminal and other Offences Act within the stipulated timeframe.

The proposed amendment, if assented to by the president, would criminalize the act of accusing someone of witchcraft and seek to prevent the killing of individuals wrongly accused of witchcraft.

Despite instances of such killings, the President has not yet signed the Act into law.

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson contends that the President’s failure to assent to the bill constitutes a breach of the constitution.

Consequently, he has called on Parliament to take action against the President if he continues to withhold his assent.

On the other hand, Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has disclosed that certain corrections are being addressed before the President signs the amendment into law.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin also expressed his displeasure with the President’s delay in signing the law and the lack of communication regarding the reasons for withholding assent.
