The number of casualties in the ethnic clashes between the Adele Challa and Akyode communities in the Oti Region has now reached eight.
Extensive damage has been inflicted on properties, and residents, fearing for their safety, have evacuated the area, resulting in the transformation of the affected communities into ghost towns.
The Oti Region has been grappling with tribal conflicts involving the Adele, Challa, and Akyode ethnic groups, primarily centered around land litigation issues.
Recently, tensions escalated due to disagreements related to a Yam Festival organized by the Akyode people in Nkwanta town, sparking renewed hostilities.
Despite efforts by the Oti Regional Security Council to mediate and resolve the underlying issues, clashes persistently plague the town.
In response to the escalating situation, the Interior Ministry has implemented a 13-hour-long curfew on Nkwanta township and prohibited the carrying of arms and ammunition in an attempt to restore order and security to the area.
