The Kumasi Freedom Lions Club organized a diabetes awareness and screening initiative for market women at Bantama in the Kumasi metropolis.
The event was aimed to educate and screen hundreds of individuals, including traders, kayaye, and shoppers at the facility.
Mrs. Catherine Korankye Eastwood, a senior nursing officer at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the treasurer for Kumasi Freedom Lions Club, conducted an informative session for the market women.
She highlighted high-risk factors such as smoking, lack of exercise, obesity, and family history associated with diabetes. Additionally, 300 individuals were educated during the day through announcements at the Information Center in the market.
In an interview, Mrs. Catherine Korankye Eastwood emphasized the importance of regular testing to determine one’s diabetes status. She pointed out that many people living with diabetes were unaware of their condition.
Mrs. Eastwood also stressed the significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and overall physical activity, offering advice on healthy eating after the screening.
Dr. Paul Obeng, the Childhood Cancer Chairperson at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and a member of Kumasi Freedom Lions Club, shared insights into Lions Club International, the world’s largest voluntary service organization.
Dr. Obeng took the opportunity to educate Ghanaians about the dangers of diabetes, emphasizing the need for frequent testing to ascertain one’s health status.
Finally, some of the market women who benefited from the exercise expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the Kumasi Freedom Lions Club for their impactful gesture.
