In response to the recent Akosombo Dam spillage and subsequent floods in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East Regions, the Ghanaian government has allocated an amount of GH¢220 million to support the relief phase for affected communities.
This announcement was made by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, during his presentation of the government’s Budget Statement and Economic Policy for the 2024 Financial Year in Parliament.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, caused by the Volta River Authority (VRA), resulted in significant destruction to properties, businesses, and farmlands in the Volta, Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East Regions.
The allocated funds are intended to aid in the relief efforts to support affected communities in these regions.
The Finance Minister highlighted that the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, would allocate additional resources for the restoration phase to help rebuild livelihoods impacted by the flooding.
He expressed relief that despite the significant challenges posed by the Akosombo Dam spillage, no lives were lost during the flooding incident.
