Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has vehemently refuted claims made by the minority caucus regarding the funding for the reconstruction of La General Hospital.
Speaking before Parliament on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the minister clarified that allegations suggesting the absence of a local financier for the project are unfounded.
Agyemang-Manu assured the legislative body that the Finance Ministry has successfully identified an alternative local funding source amounting to 50 million Euros for the reconstruction of La General Hospital.
The hospital, which was demolished in 2020 due to structural defects, has been awaiting the commencement of the reconstruction project.
During his update to Parliament, the Health Minister expressed the government’s steadfast commitment to completing the project, emphasizing the importance of the new funding source in making that commitment a reality.
However, members of the Minority in Parliament criticized the minister for not providing specific timelines for the resumption of work, citing past unfulfilled promises.
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, dismissed Agyemang-Manu’s claims as deceptive, pointing to a history of unmet assurances.
In response to the accusations, Agyemang-Manu defended the government’s position, asserting that the claims were not an attempt to deceive the public.
He stated, “We don’t intend to deceive anybody; we pulled down the building with good intentions…but I’m very sure that we will work to give La the hospital that La deserves.”
