Land Dispute: One dead, several injured in Sege salt mining conflict, Toflokpo Chief defends traditional livelihood

Nene Mailor Anim II, the chief of Toflokpo in the Ada and Sege area, is firm in his stance that the people of his community cannot be deprived of their traditional livelihood by Electrochem Ghana Limited, a salt company operating in the area.

A dispute between the residents of Sege in the Greater Accra Region and Electrochem Ghana Limited, concerning the Songhor Lagoon, led to a tragic incident in which one person was shot and killed, and approximately 25 others were injured.

This attack on the local residents was allegedly carried out by land guards hired to protect Electrochem’s concession and prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the area.

The armed land guards reportedly launched an indiscriminate assault on the village of Toflokpo.

The residents are resolute in their belief that they should not be denied access to their decades-old source of livelihood simply because a mining license has been granted to extract salt from the area.

Chief Nene Mailor Anim II emphasized the importance of not depriving his people of their means of sustenance and condemned the attack on his community.
