Minister of Health instructs Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to reopen Renal Dialysis Unit for outpatient services

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, has instructed the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to immediately reopen the Renal Dialysis Unit for outpatient services.

The unit had been closed to outpatient services in May 2023 due to the high cost of dialysis consumables, as stated by the hospital management.

Isaac Baah Ofei, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, has confirmed that the Minister of Health has issued the directive for the immediate reopening of the unit to serve outpatients.

This decision came in response to numerous pleas from kidney patients nationwide, as 19 members had reportedly passed away due to the closure of the unit and the high treatment costs at private health facilities.

Additionally, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, who is also the MP for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has called on the government to consider fully subsidizing the cost of dialysis treatment or reducing the expenses to a minimum.
