Vice President of Imani Africa, Bright Simons, has expressed concerns about the standing of the Supreme Court of Ghana in light of a former Justice of the Supreme Court, William Atuguba’s, criticism of the court’s handling of the case of Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson.
He urged the Supreme Court to engage in soul-searching and address the concerns raised against it.
William Atuguba, in a public lecture, criticized the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the Assin North MP case, stating that it was scandalous and raised questions about the consistency of the court’s judgments and application of statutes and documents.
Bright Simons suggested that if the Supreme Court does not address the concerns and criticisms, its standing is bound to sink.
He emphasized the importance of justice, consistency, and adherence to statutes and documents in judicial decisions.
In the Assin North MP case, the Supreme Court declared James Gyakye Quayson’s election as unconstitutional due to his dual citizenship status at the time of filing his nomination for the parliamentary elections.
Quayson later contested in a by-election and won. Atuguba criticized the Supreme Court’s handling of the matter and called for a reevaluation of its judgments and consistency.
