Hassan Ayariga, the Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), has pledged to eliminate sports betting in Ghana if he is elected as the president of the country.
Sports betting has seen a significant increase in Ghana in recent years, with the government taking steps to impose taxes on this practice.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) officially implemented a 10% withholding tax on all betting, games, and lottery winnings in August.
During an interview at 3FM, Ayariga argues that the high rate of unemployment is driving young people to engage in betting, and he has promised to eradicate this practice and make it illegal.
He stated, “I will abolish betting if I become president because betting is a pursuit for those who are not inclined to work. Why do people bet? It’s because they can’t find jobs.”
He further emphasized his commitment to creating opportunities for the youth to engage in productive activities, such as designing and building, to advance technology and contribute to the nation’s development.
